Over the years, I have had a wide variety of people work for me. People from different religions, different countries, the LGBTQ community, mothers, fathers, extroverts and introverts. I am open to hiring people from any background. However, the most important quality I look for is the ability to empower me to live my own life how I choose. This takes a careful balancing act of professional boundaries. That being said, I am still friendly without becoming friends, with all my support staff. I am looking for people who are open-minded and can go with the flow.
Sometimes people apply for the job thinking they can improve my life by having me do what they enjoy, or people apply looking for a friendship, or with strong caretaking tendencies. While these traits are suitable for other jobs, they are not suitable for this one. This job is about holding space for me to be exactly who I was meant to be in spite of my need for assistance.
Basic Job Requirements:
In general I am looking for people that can effectively and respectfully fulfill the following basic job duties:
- Be on time for all scheduled shifts.
- Work all of your scheduled shifts unless you have a legitimate reason, like illness.
- Be selective with requesting time off – 2 weeks with a written request.
- Good attendance – 90-95% rate.
- Learn how to do all of the job duties during your initial training, and then continuing learning on the job with me.
- View and treat me as your employer.
- Be willing to communicate through any issues.
- Be respectful, responsive, and kind to other staff, roommates, my friends, and myself.
- I can walk with human support – don’t cradle me.
- Give as much advanced notice as possible when you are sick.
- Don’t anticipate my needs, but do attend to them in a timely manner when I request assistance.
- Don’t use any of your devices at work unless it is a true emergency. No exceptions for students.
- Complete my personal care as requested, such driving my minivan, housework chores, cat care, and others – to be assigned.
